So, what is kief? It's the fine golden powder that builds up at the bottom of your grinder: trichomes, the tiny resin glands covering the flowers, knocked loose during grinding and sifted through the screen. It's the raw material of traditional hashish, also called "pollen" or kif. Here's where it comes from, how it differs from pollen and dry sift, how to collect it with the right grinder, how to store it without damaging it, what people do with it, and why its name comes from the Arabic word kayf.

Kief: definition

What is kief? Trichome dust.

Look at a flower up close: it's covered in tiny shiny hairs, as if dusted with sugar. These are the glandular trichomes. They make and store the plant's resin, meaning most of its cannabinoids and terpenes. When the flower is handled, dried or ground, some of these glands break off. Piled up, they form a sandy powder, from pale green to golden blond: kief.

It's spelled kief, kif or keef, and many people call it "pollen". That last word is misleading: pollen, in the botanical sense, is produced by male plants. Kief comes from the female flowers: it's bits of resin, not reproductive cells.

  • What it is: trichomes knocked off the flower, in powder form.
  • Where you find it: at the bottom of the grinder, in the chamber under the screen.
  • Why people keep it: it concentrates the resin, so the aromas and cannabinoids.
  • What it becomes: once pressed, it's the principle behind traditional hashish.

Kief under the microscope

Resin glands a few tenths of a millimetre wide.

A study published in 2023 in the Journal of Cannabis Research used an electron microscope to observe how trichomes develop on cannabis flowers. The glandular heads measured 40 to 110 µm across, perched on stalks of very variable length. The authors also cite earlier measurements: about 129 µm on average for high-THC strains, against 80 µm for hemp.

Capitate-stalked trichomes

The biggest ones: a round head on top of a stalk. According to the 2023 study, they dominate on mature flowers.

Small bulbous trichomes

Much smaller (15 to 30 µm heads in the same study), they count for little in the harvest.

Another study, published in PLOS One, describes these trichomes as small projections made of a stalk and a head, responsible for producing the resin. The head works like a tiny chemical workshop fed by the flower. That's why kief is so aromatic: it concentrates the most fragrant part of the plant.

Don't mix them up

Kief, pollen, dry sift: three words, three things.

All three terms revolve around the same material, trichome resin. What changes is how it's collected and the final form. French dictionaries even record the slang meaning of "pollen": a type of hashish.

Dry sift is a sort of methodical version of grinder kief: we cover it in our article on static hash and dry sift. When trichomes are extracted with ice water rather than dry, it's called Ice-O-Lator or bubble hash.

Kief grinder

3- or 4-piece grinder: it's all about the screen.

What matters for collecting kief isn't the number of pieces but having a screen. According to Leafly's guide, two- or three-piece grinders have no kief catcher: the powder sticks to the teeth and clogs the grinder. The four-piece model, the most common, adds a fine mesh under the storage chamber that lets trichomes through to a bottom compartment. Watch out for naming: in shops, a "3-piece grinder" sometimes counts the lid separately. Check that there really is a mesh and a bottom chamber.

The Grinder Kush Box 2-en-1 takes a different approach: grinding and storing your flowers in one place. To compare models, read how to choose a grinder, and find the whole range in our accessories.

How to collect kief

Collecting kief without damaging the screen.

1

Grind dry

A flower that's too moist sticks to the teeth and clogs the mesh: a well-dried flower works better.

2

Let the screen do its job

A few light taps on the closed grinder help the powder through. Leafly also suggests a clean coin in the chamber, which shakes the mesh.

3

Collect it cleanly

A kief scraper, a small flat spatula the size of a fingernail, or a brush, to empty the chamber without puncturing the screen.

The chamber fills up slowly: it takes many sessions to get a visible amount. That's why kief is often set aside and then used in small amounts.

What the sources say

What science says about kief.

Kief is a craft product, but it rests on well-documented biology. Here are the references that shed light on how it's made and stored.

EUDA · European cannabis markets

The European drugs agency describes resin production as separating the glandular trichomes, mostly found on the flowers, to get a fine powder that's then compressed. Traditional methods: rubbing and sifting.

PLOS One · 2021

Glandular trichomes, small projections made of a stalk and a head, are responsible for producing cannabis resin.

Journal of Cannabis Research · 2023

Glandular heads of 40 to 110 µm, which grow as flowering progresses, then turn brown and become senescent at maturity.

Photochemical & Photobiological Sciences · 2024

Exposure to light significantly degrades cannabinoids, and oxygen strongly speeds up this degradation. THC is the most light-sensitive, CBD the most resistant.

Put simply: kief is the richest part of the flower, but also the most exposed. As a powder, its contact surface with air and light is huge. References at the bottom of the page.

Kief: uses and effect

Sprinkle it, coat with it or press it.

Kief is rarely used on its own. It's usually added to a session to lift the aroma and intensity. Its effect is that of the flower it came from, only more concentrated, since it gathers the resin. Three uses come up most often.

  • Sprinkled on ground flower, in a joint or a vaporiser, in small amounts.
  • As a coating, as in "moon rock" style flowers: we've written an article on moon rocks.
  • Pressed into a slab: heat and pressure fuse the powder, which turns into resin. That's the principle behind traditional hashish, which we explain in what is hash.

Concentrating means concentrating everything. Kief gathers the resin, and so the cannabinoids, including any traces of THC in a hemp flower. The strength shown on a flower no longer applies to the powder you get from it. Keep it for your personal use, start with a very small amount, and never before driving.

Storage

Light, air, heat: the three enemies.

Because it's a powder, kief deteriorates faster than a whole flower. The 2024 photodegradation study is clear: light degrades cannabinoids, and oxygen strongly speeds up the process. So the right move is to limit both.

  • Leaving it for weeks in the grinder. The chamber isn't airtight and the kief gets packed down.
  • A clear jar on the shelf. Light is one of the main causes of degradation.
  • A big half-empty jar. The more air, the faster the oxidation.
  • Near a heat source. The resin gets sticky and clumps together.

The ideal: a small airtight, opaque or tinted glass jar, kept somewhere cool and dry, filled as close as possible to the level of the powder. And as always, out of reach of children and pets.

Where the word comes from

From Arabic "kayf" to Moroccan kif.

The word comes from the Arabic kayf, kīf in Maghrebi Arabic, which according to the Trésor de la langue française means "pleasure; well-being, health; joy", then the cheerful state caused by hashish, and finally hashish itself. French adopted it in several stages.

1670

First trace as "Kaif", meaning "rest, well-being", in a translation of a history of the Ottoman Empire.

1789

The spelling "Kief" appears in a translation from Italian of the Letters of Abbé Sestini.

1857-1859

For painter and writer Eugène Fromentin, "kief" means a mix of tobacco and Indian hemp.

1885

The form "kif" takes hold, notably in the work of Alphonse Daudet.

In the Maghreb, kif traditionally refers to the dried flowers of a hemp variety, mixed with tobacco and smoked in a pipe. According to the EUDA, Morocco is still the main source of the cannabis resin found on the European market. Today, in shops and on grinders, "kief" mostly means trichome powder.

Your questions

What people ask us about kief.

What is kief?

It's the powder made of trichomes, the small resin glands on the flowers, which break off during grinding. You collect it at the bottom of a grinder fitted with a screen.

Kief or kif: what's the difference?

Both words come from the Arabic kayf, "well-being". In the Maghreb, kif traditionally means a mix of hemp and tobacco; today, kief mostly means trichome powder. Both spellings are used for this powder.

What's the difference between kief and pollen?

In everyday language, "pollen" means the same powder, or a hashish made from it. In the botanical sense, pollen comes from male plants, whereas kief is resin from the female flowers.

How do you collect kief from a grinder?

You need a grinder with a screen, usually a four-piece one. The powder goes through the mesh and builds up in the bottom chamber, which you empty with a scraper or a brush.

Does a 3-piece grinder collect kief?

Only if it has a mesh and a bottom chamber. According to Leafly, two- or three-piece models have no kief catcher; check for a screen rather than the number of pieces advertised.

How do you store kief?

In a small airtight, opaque jar, somewhere cool and dry. Light and oxygen degrade cannabinoids, all the faster because kief is a powder.

What effect does kief have?

That of the flower it came from, only more concentrated, since it gathers the resin and therefore the cannabinoids. That's why it's used in small amounts, and never before driving.

Can you make hash with kief?

That's the principle behind traditional hashish: trichome powder is pressed, often with heat, until it forms a resin. Bear in mind that this also concentrates the cannabinoids.
