Piatella hash: the creamy hash explained (origin, process, texture)

Resins & extractions
Piatella hash is a hash with a creamy, almost buttery texture, made by cold curing bubble hash extracted from fresh frozen plants. Born in Barcelona, it takes its name from the Italian word piatto, "flat", because of the shape it's pressed into while it cures. Here's how it's made, how to recognise it, what sets it apart from White Piatella and 3X Filtré, and how to use it.

Piatella hash, a cold cured hash.
Forget the dry slab that crumbles under the lighter. You can tell Piatella the moment you touch it: it's soft, sticky and handles almost like a paste. It isn't a new molecule or a new extraction method, but a curing technique applied to a hash that's already very clean: bubble hash, made with ice water.
The idea fits in one sentence: you take top-quality bubble hash, made from plants frozen right after harvest (fresh frozen), press it flat under vacuum, then leave it to mature somewhere cool, away from air and light, for several weeks. That slow maturing, called the cold cure, is what gives it its creamy consistency.
Where Piatella comes from
An Italian name, a Catalan invention.
Despite the name, Piatella isn't Italian. It was developed in Barcelona, at the Uncle's Farm cannabis club, by a grower nicknamed "Zio". The technique became known towards the end of the 2010s, building on cold drying methods that bubble hash makers were already using.
The name comes from the Italian piatto, "flat", with the suffix -ella, which adds a sense of smallness: a "little flat patty". It's a direct nod to the way the hash is pressed flat under vacuum while it cures. The proper Italian spelling would be piattella, with a double "t", but the simpler "piatella" is the one that stuck, in France and everywhere else.
Piatella or piattella: both spellings mean exactly the same product.
What the sources say
From frozen plant to creamy hash.
Guides from extraction specialists all describe the same sequence. Every step matters: a failed Piatella is usually down to starting bubble hash with too much plant matter in it, or a cure that wasn't properly controlled.
1 · Fresh frozen
The plant is frozen right after harvest, with no drying. The trichomes keep more of their terpenes, and frozen buds don't crumble the way dry flower does (Alchimia).
2 · Ice water extraction
The material is gently stirred in water and ice, then filtered through bags of decreasing mesh size, from 220 down to 25 microns. The best grades are collected between 90 and 120 µm (Lowtemp Plates).
3 · Drying
The wet hash is dried, often by freeze-drying, to remove the water without any heat (West Coast Cure).
4 · Pressing flat and curing
The hash is pressed flat under vacuum, then stored between 4 and 10 °C, in the dark, with no temperature swings. After about 4 to 6 weeks, it takes on its buttery texture (Sensi Seeds, Alchimia).
None of these steps uses heat or solvents. That's what separates Piatella from rosin, which is pressed between two heated plates, and from extracts made with butane or ethanol. References at the bottom of the page.
How to spot the real thing
Five signs that never lie.
"Piatella" has become a trendy word, and these days you'll see it on resins that are Piatella in name only. Here's what you should expect from a genuine Piatella texture, and you can check it all by eye and by touch.
- A soft, creamy texture. It gives under your finger, sticks a little, and doesn't crumble into dust.
- A light colour. Blond, beige or cream: the low oxidation during the cure keeps the hash bright.
- A strong smell as soon as you open it. The terpenes preserved by the cold give an intense aroma, true to the plant.
- An even look. No bits of leaf or visible grains: the starting material is very clean.
- A feel that changes with temperature. In the fridge it firms up; between your fingers it turns pliable again.
- A dry, brittle resin sold as "Piatella": that's a different hash with a new label.
- A very dark colour and a flat smell: a sign of oxidation or poor storage.
- No information on strength or lab tests: whatever the name, walk away.
Compared with other resins
Piatella, White Piatella, 3X Filtré: what's different.
These three names often come up together, and people regularly ask us what sets them apart. The table below compares our three Delta-P products, as described on their product pages.
| Piatella Delta-P | White Piatella Delta-P | 3X Filtré Delta-P | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Style | Creamy, cold cured hash | Light-coloured Piatella | Triple-filtered resin |
| Delta-P strength | 50 % | 30 % | 40 % |
| Texture | Soft, melting, buttery | Supple, crumbles easily | Supple and even |
| Aromas | Classic hash, buttery note | Warm spices and citrus | Earthy, intense |
| Who it's for | People used to strong resins | Discovering the Piatella style | Fans of pure resins |
White Piatella is the "light" take on the style: the same supple texture, with a gentler strength. 3X Filtré, on the other hand, isn't cold cured at all: it's resin filtered several times over, and we've covered it in detail in what is 3X Filtré. And if you like airy textures, Jaune Mousseux plays in a different league: foamy hash.
Looking for "blueberry Piatella"? That's the profile of our Heisenberg Delta-P 60 %: a bluish Piatella look and blueberry notes, with the highest strength in the range.
At Golden High
Our Piatella: the style, in a Delta-P version.
Let's be clear: the original Piatella, the one from the Barcelona clubs, is a THC hash and a controlled drug in France. What we sell are resins that recreate the Piatella style (the texture, the look, the aroma profile) in a Delta-P version: a CBDX-based range, under 0.3 % THC, lab tested batch by batch.
That's why our product pages say "THC-free" next to the Delta-P strength. The molecule and the legal framework in France are explained on our Delta-P page. And to see where a 50 % Piatella sits in the range, from an everyday resin to the strongest one, read our complete guide to Delta-P resins.

White Piatella Delta-P 30 %
Lighter, spicier, gentler. The right way in if you've never tried this style.

How to use it
Creamy, so handle it differently.
Its sticky texture makes Piatella harder to crumble than a dry resin. Specialists mainly use it for dabbing and in concentrate vaporisers, which bring out its aromas. In a joint it works too, but it takes a bit of technique.
Firm it up
A few minutes in the fridge make it less sticky. You can then pinch off small pieces, or roll it into a thin snake to lay along the joint.
Start small
With a 50 % resin, a piece the size of a grain of rice is enough to start. Wait before you have more.
Store it properly
An airtight container, away from light and heat: that way it keeps its softness and its aromas.
Remember: our resins are for adults only. Start low, leave time between doses, and never drive after using them.
For the other ways to use a resin, from joints to vaping, we've covered everything in our guide on how to vape hash.
Your questions
What people ask us about Piatella.
What is Piatella hash?
A solventless hash with a creamy texture. It starts as bubble hash made with ice water from fresh frozen plants, which is pressed flat and then left to cure somewhere cool, between 4 and 10 °C, for several weeks.
Why is Piatella hash called that?
The name comes from the Italian "piatto", meaning "flat": while it cures, the hash is pressed flat under vacuum. The exact Italian spelling is "piattella", but "piatella" is the one that stuck.
Where does Piatella come from?
From Barcelona, in Spain. The technique was developed at the Uncle's Farm cannabis club, before spreading across Europe in the late 2010s.
What's the difference between Piatella and White Piatella?
At Golden High, Piatella Delta-P is a melting 50 % resin with a classic hash taste; White Piatella is a lighter version at 30 %, with a spicy, citrus profile.
Is CBD Piatella legal?
A THC Piatella is a controlled drug in France. Our Piatella products are Delta-P versions: a CBDX-based range, under 0.3 % THC, lab tested batch by batch. Rules vary from country to country, so check the regulations where you live.
How do you smoke Piatella?
Chill it for a few minutes so it's less sticky, then pinch off a small piece or roll it into a thin snake in your joint. It also works really well in a vaporiser. Always start with a small amount.
What is blueberry Piatella?
It's the nickname for Piatella with a fruity blueberry profile. In our range, that's Heisenberg Delta-P 60 %, with its bluish Piatella look.
