Bubble hash: what ice-o-lator hash is and what full melt means

Solventless hash

Bubble hash is made with the ice-o-lator method, which separates cannabis trichomes using water and ice, then collects them in filter bags with ever finer mesh, measured in microns. It's also called ice water hash, and its best grades are known as "full melt". Here's where the name comes from, how the principle works, what the stars mean, how it differs from dry sift and Piatella, and where the law stands in Italy.

The definition

Ice-o-lator: what it is, ice water hash.

When you type "ice-o-lator" into Google, you're actually looking for two things at once: a brand of filter bags and the method it gave rise to. The brand became the name of the process, and the word now refers to any hash made by separating trichomes with ice.

Trichomes are the tiny resin glands that cover cannabis flowers: they hold most of the cannabinoids and terpenes. Every hash is, at heart, a trichome concentrate. What changes from one hash to another is how they're knocked off and separated from the plant material. The ice-o-lator uses only cold, water and filtration: no chemical solvents, no heat.

A brand that became a word

From a Dutch brand to a common noun.

The story runs through Amsterdam and Mila Jansen, a well-known figure of Dutch hemp culture. In 1994 she launched the Pollinator, a rotating drum lined with screens that knocks trichomes off dry, inspired by the motion of a tumble dryer. In 1998 came the Ice-O-Lator: a kit of graded filter bags to use with water and ice.

The system spread fast and, in everyday use, the brand became the name of the method itself. A bit like those objects we call by the name of the best-known brand: today people say "ice-o-lator" even when the bags are from another brand, and "bubble hash" for the product it yields.

Ice-o-lator

The name of the method (and the original kit): separating trichomes in ice water and filtering them through decreasing micron sizes.

Bubble hash

The resulting product. The name refers to the way the best grades bubble and melt when heated.

Full melt

The highest grade of bubble hash: it melts almost completely, leaving no plant residue.

The principle, not the recipe

How bubble hash is made: the principle in brief.

Lots of people search for "how to make ice-o-lator". Here we explain the physical principle, which helps you understand and judge a product, not a process to follow: in Italy as in France, processing cannabis that contains THC is a criminal offence, more on that below.

It all rests on a simple property: at low temperature, trichome heads become rigid and brittle. With gentle agitation in ice water they break off the flower and, being denser, sink to the bottom, while leaves and stems stay higher up. The water then passes through a series of bags, each with a finer mesh than the last.

220 µm

The first bag mainly catches ice and coarse plant debris.

190 and 160 µm

Large trichomes mixed with more plant material: mid or low grades.

120 and 90 µm

The most sought-after zone: mature trichome heads, few impurities. This is usually where full melt is found.

73 µm

Medium-sized trichomes, still good quality but generally less pure.

45 and 25 µm

Small immature trichomes, fine dust and contaminants: the lowest grades.

Each fraction collected is then dried, often cold or by freeze-drying, because leftover moisture damages the aromas and shelf life. When the starting material is a plant frozen right after harvest, it's called fresh frozen: we covered it in our article on frozen hash, the cold-extracted hash.

What the sources say

Full melt and stars: how quality is measured.

Bubble hash isn't judged by colour alone. The industry uses a 1 to 6 star scale based on how well it melts: the more pure trichome heads a grade contains, the more completely it melts under heat. It's an informal scale, with no official standard. Here's what specialist sources report, cited at the bottom of the page.

Lowtemp Plates · microns

The best-quality bubble hash sits between 90 and 120 µm, where mature trichome heads are concentrated with the fewest impurities. Full melt (5-6 stars) comes mostly from these bags.

Lowtemp Plates · lower grades

Half melt (3-4 stars) is more often found in the 160 and 73 µm bags; 1-2 star grades, heavier in plant material, in the 190 and 45 µm ones.

High Times · full melt

From 5 to 6 stars it's called full melt: it should contain nothing but trichome heads and, when heated, turn liquid and vaporise without residue that burns.

High Times · half melt

From 3 to 4 stars: it contains contaminants, so it only partly melts. Hence the name "half melt".

Watch out: two labs or two producers can give the same material different star ratings. Stars remain an indication, not a guarantee: they say nothing about cannabinoid content or lab tests.

Comparison

Bubble hash, dry sift, Piatella: who does what.

The ice-o-lator is one of the two main routes to solventless hash. The other is dry sieving, dry sift, which separates trichomes by shaking the dried plant over micron screens: we explained it in dry sift and static hash. More refined products are then made from these two bases.

Piatella is the end point of the ice water route: a high-quality bubble hash, pressed flat and cured for several weeks in the cool, until it turns creamy. The whole story is in Piatella, the creamy hash. Rosin, for its part, is made by pressing the material between two hot plates: no water, but heat, as we explain in what is rosin.

Eyes, nose, fingers

What makes good bubble hash.

The word "ice-o-lator" on a label isn't enough. A bubble hash can be excellent or mediocre depending on the starting material, the bag it came from and the care taken with drying and storage. Here are the clues that matter.

  • A light colour. Blond, golden or beige: little chlorophyll and little oxidation. Dark green gives away plant material.
  • A grainy texture that softens. At room temperature, the best grades turn sticky and pliable.
  • A clear smell as soon as you open it. Cold preserves terpenes: the scent should be fresh and true to the plant.
  • A clean melt. When heated, a good grade bubbles and melts without leaving black residue.
  • A stated percentage and a lab test. The only objective data on what the product really contains.
  • "Full melt" on a hard, dark resin: the label describes behaviour under heat, you can't make it up.
  • A mouldy or damp smell: a sign of botched drying, steer clear.
  • No information on the percentage or lab test: whatever the name, you don't know what you're buying.

The law in Italy

Bubble hash and Italian law: a shifting framework.

The method doesn't change the product's status. In Italy, a hash that contains THC is one of the narcotics covered by the Consolidated Act DPR 309/1990: production, supply and possession for resale are crimes (art. 73), while possession for personal use leads to administrative penalties imposed by the prefect, such as suspension of the driving licence or passport (art. 75). Here are the milestones that concern hemp and its derivatives.

2 December 2016

Law no. 242 authorises growing hemp varieties listed in the EU common catalogue, with THC capped at 0.2% (tolerance up to 0.6% for the farmer).

30 May 2019

The joint chambers of the Italian Court of Cassation (ruling no. 30475) hold that the sale of hemp derivatives, such as flowers and resins, is not covered by law 242/2016.

12 April 2025

Decree-law of 11 April 2025, no. 48 (security decree) comes into force. Its art. 18 bans the import, supply, processing, trade and transport of hemp flowers and products containing them, "including extracts, resins and oils", under the penalties of DPR 309/1990.

9 June 2025

Law no. 80 converts the decree into law.

December 2025 - April 2026

The courts of Brindisi (2 December 2025) and Trani (28 April 2026) refer questions on art. 18 to the Constitutional Court. For the Trani order, the public hearing is set for 9 February 2027.

Key point: in October 2026, art. 18 is in force but challenged before the Italian Constitutional Court. No decision has been handed down yet. Before buying a hemp-derived resin in Italy, check the rule in force at the time of purchase.

At our place

The ice water style, in a Delta-P version.

Let's be clear: Golden High doesn't sell THC bubble hash. We're a French shop and we ship from France Delta-P resins that borrow a style (texture, look, aroma profile): a CBDX-based range, under 0.3% THC, lab-tested batch by batch. The molecule and its framework are explained on our Delta-P page.

If you like the soft texture born from the ice water route, the closest is our Piatella Delta-P 50%, melting and buttery. The White Piatella at 30% is the milder version. All the other resins, with the percentage shown on each product page, are in the Delta-P hash collection.

1

Check the percentage

Each product page shows the Delta-P percentage. If you don't know the product, start with the mildest.

2

Dose low

To start, the equivalent of a grain of rice is enough. Wait before having more.

3

Store it cool

Airtight box, away from light and heat, to keep it soft and aromatic.

Adults only. Never get behind the wheel after use.

Your questions

What people ask us about bubble hash.

What is the ice-o-lator?

It's the method that separates cannabis trichomes with water and ice and filters them through bags with decreasing mesh sizes. The name comes from the Ice-O-Lator kit, launched in 1998 by Mila Jansen in Amsterdam.

How is ice-o-lator hash made?

The principle: cold makes trichomes brittle, they break off in ice water and are collected in bags from 220 to 25 µm, then dried. We don't give instructions: with THC it's a criminal offence, in Italy as in France.

What is bubble hash?

It's the hash made with the ice-o-lator method. The name refers to the bubbles the best grades form when heated, before they melt.

What does full melt mean?

It's the highest grade of bubble hash, 5 to 6 stars on an informal 1 to 6 scale: material made almost entirely of trichome heads, which melts almost completely without residue.

What's the difference between ice-o-lator and dry sift?

The ice-o-lator separates trichomes in ice water; dry sift separates them dry, by shaking the dried plant over screens. Neither uses solvents.

Which microns give the best bubble hash?

According to specialist sources, the best grades are usually found in the 90 and 120 µm bags, where mature trichome heads are concentrated with the fewest impurities.

Is bubble hash legal in Italy?

With THC, it's a narcotic under DPR 309/1990. On top of that, since 12 April 2025, art. 18 of DL 48/2025 bans trade in resins and extracts from hemp flowers; the rule is currently under review by the Italian Constitutional Court.
