THX cannabinoid: what it is, reported effects and THX+ legal status
By the Golden High teamUpdated 9 November 20268 min read
Semi-synthetic cannabinoids
The THX cannabinoid, often sold as THX+, is a trade name that appeared in hemp shops for flowers, resins or pods sold as stronger than CBD: it's not an identified molecule, and its exact composition isn't published. So it has nothing to do with cinema's THX, the sound standard created by Lucasfilm in 1983. Here's what the name covers, what we know (very little), what users report, and why "not listed" doesn't mean "legal".

THX cannabinoid: a name, not a molecule.
In the hemp world, THX (or THX+) is a product name, not a chemical name. Unlike THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), HHC (hexahydrocannabinol) or THCP (tetrahydrocannabiphorol), which each refer to a specific molecule, THX doesn't match any substance described in the scientific literature or in the health agency reports we checked.
In practice, "THX" or "THX+" is a label stuck on flowers, resins or vape liquids sold as more intense than regular CBD. What's behind it depends on the maker, and the formula isn't made public. It's the same pattern as other trade names we've already picked apart, like THV-N10 or NL-1.
- What it is: a trade name for hemp-based products.
- What it isn't: an identified molecule, with a chemical name and studies.
- Composition: not published by the makers.
- Status: not named by the ANSM (the French medicines agency) as far as we know, which doesn't amount to approval.
The other THXs
THX meaning: don't mix them up.
Type "THX" into Google and you'll land on something else first. The acronym has several lives, and none of them has anything to do with hemp:
| The "THX" in question | What it is | Link to cannabis |
|---|---|---|
| THX Ltd. | Company founded in 1983 by George Lucas, a Lucasfilm division, that certifies the sound quality of cinemas and audio equipment | None |
| THX 1138 | George Lucas sci-fi film released in 1971 | None |
| "thx" | Short for thanks in messages | None |
| THX-110 | Code name of a drug candidate combining delta-9-THC and palmitoylethanolamide, tested at Yale in 16 adults | Clinical trial, unrelated to products sold in shops |
| THX / THX+ in shops | Trade name for flowers, resins and pods | Hemp-based products |
THX-110 is a pharmaceutical project studied in a medical setting. It tells us nothing about products sold under the THX+ name, and vice versa.
What the sources say
What we know about THX: almost nothing.
We searched scientific databases and the French and European health authorities. Here, honestly, is what exists and what's missing. References at the bottom of the page.
Scientific literature · November 2026
No publication describes a hemp-derived molecule called "THX". The only results for "THX" combined with "cannabinoid" concern THX-110, an unrelated drug project.
ANSM · list of controlled drugs
The consolidated list of controlled drugs updated on 16 February 2026 doesn't mention THX. It does, however, contain a generic clause covering any substance derived from the benzo[c]chromene core, which takes in a large share of semi-synthetic cannabinoids.
Conseil d'État · 6 June 2025
France's highest administrative court rejected the appeals against the ANSM decision of 22 May 2024 and upheld this family-based classification. So a molecule can be banned without being named.
DGS · June 2026
The DGS-Urgent alert no. 2026_07 from France's health directorate counts around 500 poisoning reports linked to synthetic or semi-synthetic cannabinoids between early 2025 and late April 2026. It doesn't mention THX, but it shows this market is no trivial matter.
In other words, nobody can say what a "THX" product contains chemically, or describe its effects from studies. Everything out there rests on descriptions from sellers and users.
Reported effects
THX effects: what users report.
With no studies, all we have is what users and product sheets say. These descriptions are subjective, vary from one product to another, and prove nothing.
What's described
A quick onset, an intensity well above CBD, then a relaxed phase. Some talk about a "cleaner" effect than other semi-synthetics, with no data to back it up.
What's still unknown
The active dose, the duration, interactions, the effects of repeated use. And above all the exact composition, which can change from one maker or batch to the next.
An effect described as strong should be dosed that way. Start with a very small amount, wait before taking more, don't mix with alcohol or other products, and never drive afterwards. Adults only. If you feel unwell, read bad trip: what to do and, if someone is seriously unwell, call 112 (or 15, the SAMU, in France).
THX, THC, CBD
THX, THC, CBD: what sets them apart.
| THX / THX+ | THC | CBD | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nature | Trade name | Identified molecule | Identified molecule |
| Published composition | No | Yes | Yes |
| Human studies | None | Many | Many |
| Status in France | Not named, but that doesn't make it legal | Controlled drug (tolerated under 0.3% in hemp) | Not classed as a controlled drug |
If you want to understand the difference between CBD and "new generation" molecules, we explain it in CBD vs semi-synthetic cannabinoids: what's the difference. And to see where the banned molecules stand, read what is HHC and THCP: effects, dangers and legal status.
Legal or not?
Not named on the list, but not legal for all that.
This is the point that matters most, and the one where you read the most mistakes. Since the ANSM decision of 22 May 2024, in force from 3 June 2024, France no longer just lists molecules one by one: it bans whole families of cannabinoids, defined by their chemical structure.
13 June 2023
HHC, HHC-O and HHC-P become controlled drugs in France (ANSM decision of 12 June 2023).
3 June 2024
The ANSM lists cannabinoids with a benzo[c]chromene core, including THCP, HHCPO and THCA, as well as H4-CBD and H2-CBD by name.
6 June 2025
The Conseil d'État rejects the appeals and upholds the family-based classification.
20 August 2026
The fixed fine for drug use in France rises to €500 (law no. 2026-798 of 18 August 2026).
Key point: as far as we know, THX isn't named on France's list of controlled drugs, but since its composition isn't published, nobody can claim it falls outside the banned families. Never believe a seller who presents it as "completely legal".
At Golden High
THX+ and Golden High: what we offer.
With us, the THX+ name appears in a single product: the Pack Ultime, a limited edition that combines Delta-P products (Moon Rock, G13, 3X Filtré, Jaune Mousseux) and a THX+ pod. Golden High only sells products under 0.3% THC, lab-tested; how our range works is explained in the Delta-P guide.
If you'd rather stick to a format you already know, the Super Gelato Delta-P pod and the rest of the packs collection let you compare before you choose.
Read the label
A serious product states its level and stays under 0.3% THC. A name on its own, like "THX+", says nothing about what's inside.
Ask for the lab test
Every batch should be traceable to a lab analysis. No analysis, no certainty.
Start low
A small amount, time between doses, and never before driving. Adults only.
Your questions
What people ask us about THX.
What is the THX cannabinoid?
In hemp, THX (or THX+) is a trade name for flowers, resins or pods sold as more intense than CBD. It's not an identified molecule, and its composition isn't published.
What does THX mean?
Outside hemp, THX mainly refers to THX Ltd., the company George Lucas founded in 1983 to certify cinema sound quality, or to "thx", short for "thanks". In hemp, it's a product name.
What are the effects of THX?
No study describes them. Users report a quick onset, an intensity above CBD and then relaxation, but these accounts vary from product to product. Always start with a very small dose, and never before driving.
Is THX legal in France?
As far as we know it isn't named on the list of controlled drugs, but that doesn't amount to approval: since June 2024 the ANSM has banned whole families of cannabinoids, and THX's composition isn't published.
What's the difference between THX and THC?
THC is a specific molecule, a controlled drug in France, tolerated under 0.3% in hemp. THX is a trade name whose composition isn't publicly known.
Is THX+ just CBD?
Not only: it's sold as a more intense product than regular CBD. With no published composition, nobody can say exactly what it contains.
Where can I find THX+ at Golden High?
In the Pack Ultime, a limited edition combining four Delta-P products and a THX+ pod. All our products are under 0.3% THC and lab-tested.
