Cannabinoids

THCA, or tetrahydrocannabinolic acid, is the form THC takes in the living plant: an acidic precursor that isn't psychoactive as it is, but turns into THC the moment you heat it, by smoking or vaping it. In France, it has been a controlled drug since 3 June 2024, except as traces in hemp under 0.3% total THC, so a "THCA flower" is not a legal product there. Here's how it works, what sets it apart from THC, and where the confusion comes from.

The definition

What is THCA? THC before the heat.

A fresh cannabis flower contains almost no "ready-to-use" THC. The plant mainly makes its acid form, THCA (THCA-A, to be precise), in its glandular trichomes, the tiny resin glands that cover the flowers and leaves. According to a 2016 review in Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research, THCA can make up as much as 90% of the total THC in the plant.

What separates it from THC is a small group of atoms, the carboxyl group. As long as it's attached, the molecule doesn't have THC's psychoactive effects: the same review points out that, unlike THC, THCA doesn't produce a psychoactive effect in humans. But that group is fragile. A bit of heat is enough to knock it off.

  • Full name: delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA-A).
  • Origin: natural, made by the plant in its trichomes.
  • Effect as it is: not psychoactive in humans.
  • Once heated: becomes THC, which is psychoactive.
  • Status in France: a controlled drug since 3 June 2024.

THCA vs THC

THCA vs THC: it's all about heat.

The switch from THCA to THC is called decarboxylation. Heat strips off the carboxyl group as carbon dioxide, leaving THC behind. According to the 2016 review, this happens slowly during storage and drying, and very quickly when you smoke, vape or cook. Over time, THC can then break down into CBN.

Researchers at the University of Mississippi measured this reaction in the lab between 80 and 145 °C: for THCA, it follows steady kinetics with no side reactions or by-products, roughly twice as fast as for CBDA or CBGA. In other words, heating THCA means producing THC, predictably.

THCA effects

Does THCA have an effect? Not as it is.

This is the question we get most. Raw THCA won't get you high: the 2016 review notes that it doesn't produce a psychoactive effect in humans. But nobody consumes a "THCA flower" raw. Smoked, vaped or heated, it releases THC, and the effect is then that of regular cannabis, with the same risks: anxiety, a racing heart, reduced alertness, and dependence in the long run.

What sellers say

"Wellness" leads drawn from studies on cells or animals. That's preclinical work, not proof in humans, and no THCA product is authorised as a medicine or food supplement in France.

What the facts say

In practice, the THCA on sale is meant to be heated. Its "effect" is therefore that of the THC it releases, often at a high and poorly known dose.

What the sources say

What the studies and the law say.

THCA has barely been studied in humans, but its chemistry is well understood. Here are the most solid references.

Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research · 2016 (review)

THCA-A is the acidic precursor of THC. It builds up in the trichomes, can account for up to 90% of total THC, decarboxylates slowly in storage and quickly when smoked, vaped or cooked. Unlike THC, it doesn't produce a psychoactive effect in humans.

Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research · 2016 (study)

Decarboxylation of THCA-A, measured between 80 and 145 °C, follows a first-order reaction, with no side reaction or by-product.

US federal regulations · 7 CFR 990.1

"Total THC" is calculated there as the sum of delta-9-THC and 87.7% of THCA, which matches the mass lost during decarboxylation.

ANSM (the French medicines agency) · June 2024

THCA is among the cannabinoids added to the list of controlled drugs from 3 June 2024. An amendment excludes THCA naturally present in hemp, when the THC content stays within the 0.3% threshold.

The maths

Total THC: what the label hides.

Because THCA becomes THC when burned, authorities who want to measure what people will actually consume add the two together. The formula used by US regulations is simple: total THC = THC + 0.877 × THCA. The 0.877 coefficient is the share of the molecule left once the carboxyl group is gone.

Theoretical example
A flower labelled 0.2% THC and 20% THCA.
THC on the label
0.2%, so under the 0.3% threshold if that's the only line you read.
Total THC
0.2 + 0.877 × 20 = roughly 17.7% THC once burned.
Bottom line
Once lit, it's a high-THC cannabis flower.

That's the whole idea behind "THCA flower": show a very low THC figure on the lab report, while the product behaves like regular cannabis the moment you light it.

Is THCA legal?

THCA in France: a controlled drug since June 2024.

Is THCA legal in France? No. By a decision dated 22 May 2024, in force from 3 June 2024, the ANSM added cannabinoids with a benzo[c]chromene core to the list of controlled drugs, THCA included, alongside THCP, HHC and its derivatives, H4-CBD and H2-CBD. An amending decision of 3 June 2024 excludes THCA (like CBNA, THCV and THCVA) present as traces in hemp whose total THC content doesn't exceed 0.3%. The exact wording: a controlled drug since 3 June 2024, except for traces in hemp under 0.3% total THC.

30 Dec. 2021

A decree sets the maximum THC content of authorised hemp varieties at 0.30%.

22 May 2024

ANSM decision adding new cannabinoids, THCA among them, to the list of controlled drugs.

3 June 2024

Comes into force, with an exclusion for natural traces in compliant hemp.

6 June 2025

The Conseil d'État, France's highest administrative court (no. 494779), dismisses the challenges to the 2024 decision and upholds classification by chemical family.

Key takeaway: a flower, hash or vape sold as "THCA" or "high in THCA" is not a legal hemp product in France. Only natural traces of THCA in compliant hemp escape the classification. Since 20 August 2026, using a controlled drug in France can be punished with a €500 on-the-spot criminal fine.

Where the trend comes from

THCA flower, hash, vapes: a product from the United States.

The THCA flower, THCA hash and THCA vapes sold online mostly come from the US market. Over there, the 2018 agriculture law (the Farm Bill) defined hemp by its delta-9-THC content alone. Sellers took advantage of that to market flowers, resins and extracts very rich in THCA but low in THC before heating.

Congress changed the rule at the end of 2025: the new federal definition of hemp uses a total THC content, THCA included, of 0.3% max, and caps finished products at 0.4 mg of total THC per container. According to law firm DLA Piper, these provisions take effect on 12 November 2026. In France, the question has been settled since June 2024, whatever the format.

  • Trusting the THC figure on its own without checking the THCA line on the lab report.
  • Assuming a "legal" US product is legal in France: it's not the same law.
  • Ordering a "THCA flower" online: it's a controlled drug in France.

And at our place?

Our flowers: strength on the label, THC under 0.3%.

To ease in gently, Gelato Delta-P 10 % and Amnesia Delta-P 12 % are among our most moderate strengths. You'll find the whole range in our Delta-P flowers. And as with any smokable product: start low, leave time between sessions, and never before driving.

Your questions

What people ask us about THCA.

What is THCA?

It's tetrahydrocannabinolic acid, the acid form of THC made by the plant. It isn't psychoactive as it is, but turns into THC when heated.

Is THCA legal in France?

No. THCA has been a controlled drug since 3 June 2024 (ANSM decision of 22 May 2024). Only its traces in hemp under 0.3% total THC are excluded, and the Conseil d'État upheld this classification on 6 June 2025.

What's the difference between THCA and THC?

THCA carries an extra carboxyl group. As long as it's there, the molecule isn't psychoactive. Heat removes it, and THCA then becomes THC.

What does THCA do?

As it is, it won't get you high. But smoked or vaped, it quickly turns into THC, which is psychoactive. That's why a THCA-rich flower behaves like regular cannabis.

How is total THC calculated?

US regulations use the formula total THC = THC + 0.877 × THCA. A flower with 0.2% THC and 20% THCA therefore gives roughly 17.7% THC once heated.

Are THCA flower and hash allowed in France?

No. They're controlled drugs in France, whatever THC level is shown before heating. They mostly come from the US market, where the rules are also changing from 12 November 2026.

Does THCA show up on saliva tests?

Once smoked, THCA has become THC, which is what roadside tests look for. In France, driving after using a controlled drug (article L235-1 of the Highway Code) is punishable by 3 years in prison and a €9,000 fine. Never drive after consuming.
