Moon rock: what it is, effects, THC levels and how to smoke it

Flowers & concentrates

A moon rock (or moonrock) is a cannabis bud dipped in concentrate, then rolled in kief, the powdery resin. Three layers in a single nugget, which makes it far more loaded than a flower: American guides put it at around 50% THC. Born in the United States and made famous by the Californian rapper Kurupt, it isn't smoked like a regular flower. Here's where it comes from, what we know about its effects, how to use it, and what our Moon Rock Delta-P actually is.

What exactly is it

Not a moon rock strain: three products in one.

The name comes from the look: a small, light-brown, powdery nugget, hence the image of a rock from the moon. Inside, there's no particular strain and no new molecule, just an assembly. You start with a flower bud, coat it in a cannabis concentrate in oil form, then roll it in kief, the trichome powder you find at the bottom of a grinder.

Each of the three layers is already a product in its own right. Stacking them explains how dense, sticky and strong-smelling the result is. It's also why people write moon rock, moonrock or “moon rock weed” interchangeably: it's still flower, just a coated one.

Where moon rock comes from

A story of Californian rap.

Leafly, one of the main American cannabis information sites, admits it: the exact origin is a little hazy. Rumour credits the first moon rock to the Starbudz760 dispensary. What is established is the role of the rapper Kurupt, a member of Tha Dogg Pound, who made the product popular and trademarked his own version under the name Kurupt Moonrock.

2013

Kurupt meets the musician Dr. Zodiak. Soon after, the duo launches its first range of branded moon rocks (Weedmaps).

2010s

Other brands and dispensaries bring out their own versions. The strain originally used is most often GSC, or Girl Scout Cookies.

June 2017

The magazine Inverse runs a piece on the phenomenon and reports Snoop Dogg's reaction: it was too much for him.

So the moon rock started out as a branded product, born in American dispensaries. The term later became generic.

How it's made

Flower, oil, kief: what each layer does.

People often talk about a “synergy” that “multiplies the effects”. Put more simply: you add up three materials that all contain cannabinoids, and the concentration of the whole thing climbs.

1

The core

A dense flower bud. It gives the shape, part of the aromas and the structure that holds everything together.

2

The concentrate

A cannabis oil that soaks into the flower. It's the most loaded layer, and the one that makes a moon rock greasy and sticky.

3

The coating

Kief, a sifted resin powder, which sticks to the oil and covers everything. It gives the powdery look.

Kief is the raw material of traditional hash: we explain it in what hash actually is. American guides point out that any strain can be used as the core, and that quality varies a lot depending on who makes it and with what.

No recipe here. Making or possessing a THC concentrate is banned in France. We describe the principle so you know what you're looking at, not so you can reproduce it.

What the sources say

Around 50% THC, with no official figure.

No public body has measured the average THC level of moon rocks. The figures going around come from specialist guides and the American press, and they vary from one batch to the next. References at the bottom of the page.

Leafly · guide updated in 2024

Moon rocks hover around 50% THC, according to the site, when most flowers sit at roughly 20%. It adds that potency depends on how the product is made and who makes it.

Weedmaps

Same order of magnitude: more than 50% THC on average, with the advice to read the label of each product.

Inverse · 2017

The magazine mentions levels above 60% for branded moon rocks.

OFDT · 2024 figures

In France, seized herbal cannabis averaged 14.3% THC in 2024. A moon rock at 50% would therefore be about three and a half times more concentrated.

Health Canada

The Canadian agency recommends avoiding cannabis extracts with a high THC content, especially if you're new to it or only use occasionally, and starting with small amounts.

In other words: “the most concentrated flower” is a well-founded reputation, but the exact figure for any given moon rock only exists on its lab analysis.

Moon rock: the effects

Reported effects that are strong and long.

A THC moon rock produces the effects of cannabis, only more intense. The medical site Healthline describes a fast onset that really settles in after about thirty minutes, and an effect that lasts several hours, sometimes into the next day for people who aren't used to it.

That intensity and duration are what users come looking for. But effects vary from person to person, and the same source lists the most common downsides:

  • Dizziness and drowsiness, headaches.
  • Faster heart rate.
  • Anxiety and paranoia, especially in beginners.
  • Dry mouth, red eyes, coughing.
  • Short-term memory problems and strong hunger.

Healthline also points out that researchers don't yet know the full impact of high-dose cannabis on the body and brain, and that regular use of high doses can increase the risk of dependence. On that subject, read our article on powerful molecules and controlled sessions.

How to smoke a moon rock

No grinder, and some patience.

Dense and greasy, a moon rock can't be handled like a flower. Specialist guides all give the same instructions, and they apply to a hemp moon rock too.

  • Forget the grinder. It clogs up and strips off the kief coating. Crumble it with your fingers or cut small pieces with scissors.
  • Go for glass. A glass pipe or bong is the recommended way: a moon rock is too sticky to be rolled on its own.
  • Lay it on a bed of flower. A base of ground flower, a small piece on top: it burns more evenly.
  • In a joint, sprinkle it. A few crumbs over ground flower. On its own, it keeps going out.
  • Expect to relight it. It catches more slowly than a dry flower, and that's normal.

Vaporising is also among the ways of using it listed by Healthline. So is infusing it with a fat, but then the effects arrive much later: Health Canada talks about 30 minutes to 2 hours when taken orally, and up to 4 hours before you feel everything.

Before

Eat something, keep water within reach, finish whatever you had to do and pick a place where you feel comfortable.

During

One puff, then several minutes of waiting. When inhaled, it can take up to 30 minutes to feel the full effects.

Remember: a highly concentrated product, for adults and experienced users only. Start low, leave time between two uses, and never get behind the wheel after consuming.

The variants

Purple moon rock, caviar: the neighbouring names.

Purple moon rock

A moon rock whose core is a purple strain, such as Purple Haze or Grape Ape. The colour comes from the flower and doesn't mean it's any stronger.

Caviar

The word sometimes refers to moon rocks, and sometimes to buds simply dipped in oil, with no kief coating. The two terms originally described different products.

As for “moon rock weed” or “moonrock weed”, they aren't different products: it's simply how people search for moon rock online, with “weed” as a reminder that it's a flower. If you're torn between this format and a classic flower, our guide Delta-P flowers: which strain to choose sorts it out.

The Golden High selection

Our Moon Rock: the format, in a Delta-P version.

Let's be clear: the moon rock from American dispensaries is a THC product, classed as a controlled drug in France. What we sell takes the moon rock format, a compact coated core with a powdery surface, into a Delta-P version: a CBDX-based range, under 0.3% THC, lab-tested. The framework is set out on our page about Delta-P.

A point of honesty: the old title of this article promised “power in its purest form”. In our range, the Moon Rock Delta-P is listed at 20%, less than the G-13 Delta-P at 30%, a flower whose legend we tell in our article on G13. You choose the Moon Rock for its format, its resinous texture and its spicy-lemony profile, not to break a percentage record.

All our flowers, with the percentage shown on each product page, are in the Delta-P flowers collection.
